Introduction to Process Management

Process Management

Process management is the understanding of Business processes whose purpose is to meet customer needs. The process-centric management system focuses on the flow of work across the organization.

This workflow begins with customer demands and ends with customer satisfaction, ensuring that goods or services are received with quality, at the right price, and on time.

In essence, the process shows how work is carried out across internal functional areas of the organization. Process-centric management links suppliers and customers to business processes.

The process management system is a combination of activities and rules aimed at achieving coordination and consistency (uniformity) of the product obtained from successive process iterations and ensuring that all produced items are alike and similar.

By considering the steps required to perform work and establishing an interlinked chain between these steps, process management seeks to standardize, stabilize procedures, increase added value, and document processes. Through the process management system, efficiency, profitability, and production quality can be enhanced.

Benefits of Implementing Process Management

2- Reducing planning and reporting cycle time
3- Impact on goods and services
4- Reducing error rates
5- Reducing transportation and transit time
6- Timely planning
7- Improving the delivery of accessible and responsive services
8- Attracting and retaining qualified employees
9- Better documentation of work performed
10- Increasing the quality of goods and services

Critical success factors for moving from functional management to process-oriented management:
1- Mindset shift:
A common problem in organizations is functional silos. Managers and staff in each department focus only on their unit’s interests rather than the whole organization. For example, the production department may maximize output to reduce unit production costs without considering that this might lead to inventory buildup and sales problems. The organization should promote a mindset where all managers and employees consider the impact of their work and decisions on the entire organization.
2- Process map design:
Understanding processes is facilitated through process mapping (process modeling). Precise process map design turns processes into measurable activities, and based on them, responsibilities are defined and performance is measured accordingly.
3- Process measurement:
Process measurement creates a common language that enables the organization to translate strategic objectives into effective operational tasks.
